Being new to ducks (other than Pekins or Muscoveys) is it OK for me to clip my Wood Ducks wings to get them to stay with my Pekins, free range? They are locked up at night.

Thanks for any help.

Are you refering to pinioning them so that they will never be able to fly?  That will keep them from flying but they still could get away since wood ducks are not calm like domestic ducks.  If they are pinioned and free ranging then there is a better chance of them being killed by a predator since they can't fly to get away.  Also you would need to have ramps for them to get into their nest boxes.

it doesn't hurt to clip their wings..you only need to clip one wing.  But as the previous post said, it does depend on where you are..i'd say if they're inside at night you should be fine to clip them .  I pinion the wings of my swans, and the other ducks i have can't fly anyhow, Ancona, cuyoga, buff, pekin..and sebastopol geese..none of which can fly..but i've had wood ducks and mandarins,  and I clipped their wings to keepthem close to home

I don't want to pinion them.  Just clip wings, and yes, they are free range and locked up at night.

Do you already have the ducks?  Make sure you only clip the flight feathers on one wing.  If you clip both them they can potentially relearn to fly.  Since they will be locked up at night it seems like they should be okay.  Let us know how this works out.
